Montgomerie has sights on 2009 Captaincy

Colin Montgomerie has admitted that he dreams of captaining the European team to glory.

The Scottish Executive are confident that Wednesday's 750,000 investment in the game will swing the decision of the Ryder Cup committee in their favour of Scotland's bid for the 2009 event.

Montgomerie admits that his hopes of still winning selection to play the USA in eight year's time are slim.

But he says that skippering the Europeans in his homeland would be like a dream come true.

Colin Montgomerie would like nothing better than to Captain the 2009 Ryder Cup in Scotland. Allsport.

"I'll be 46 in 2009," admitted a leaner-looking Montgomerie at the latest event designed to back Scotland's bid.

"So I think it would be more like captain rather than playing.

"Obviously, if it comes to Scotland, I would love to be captain and I know they sent out a message to Spain when they gave the captaincy to Seve.

"That worked out, so hopefully they might think the same about me."
