Montgomerie US Open injury scare

Colin Montgomerie withdrew from the English Open after three holes on Friday because of a back injury.

Montgomerie had been preparing for the U.S. Open in Southern Hills, Oklahoma next week but now has doubts if he will be able to compete.

"I'm not certain to play at all, not right now," said Montgomerie, who is still in search of his first major championship. "But we'll have to see."

Monty was unable to compete in the pro-am tournament Wednesday and the injury reappeared Friday on the fourth hole. He hit four shots at the par- four hole without reaching the green when he withdrew.

"It wasn't right from this morning when I got up and when I started I couldn't even put the tee in the ground," said Montgomerie, who won this event in 1994. "I wasn't playing golf the normal way I play golf and that was obvious yesterday as well."

The Scotsman, who posted a four-over 76 in Thursday's first round, plans to see a specialist in London about the injury.
