New Zealand's David Smail won his first pro title Sunday, closing
with an even-par 70 for a two-stroke victory in the New Zealand
Open.
Smail, who turned pro in 1992, had a 7-under 273 total on The Grange
course. New Zealand's Michael Campbell, the 2000 winner, shot a
66 to tie for second with countryman Steve Alker (69), Australia's
Nathan Gatehouse (68) and England's Roger Chapman (69).
David Gossett, the 1999 U.S. Amateur champion, shot a 68 to tie
for 15th at 1-under 279. Gossett failed to earn a PGA Tour card
last year despite shooting a 59 in the qualifying tournament.
New Zealand's Bob Charles, the Senior PGA Tour star who won the
1954 tournament at age 18, closed with a 70 to match Gossett at
279.
