World top 50 all enter for the Open

The world's top 50 ranked players have been entered next month's Open at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.

The total of 2236 entries for the July 19-22 tournament is the second highest ever, behind the 2480 at St. Andrews last year.

Ninety-five players are exempt from qualifying and could be joined by 35 more from six categories still to be decided.

Seven spots are available from the money lists on both the European and US tours, eight places are on offer at both the Western Open in Chicago and Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, and the Japanese tour will provide five more.

If all the places are taken, only 26 places would be available from final qualifying, which runs on four courses around Lytham on July 15-16. Regional qualifying takes place first on July 9 at 16 courses around the British Isles.
