At the conclusion of the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, 15 players were added
to the list of those gaining direct entry into the Open Championship. Ian Woosnam,
former US Masters champion and Adam Scott, the young Australian being compared
with Tiger Woods, were among seven players not otherwise exempt in the top 25
of a cumulative money list. Eight more competitors were included through their
final placings in the Scottish Open.
This means a total of 123 exempt players, leaving 33 places open for the 384
comeptitors taking part in 36-hole final qualifying which will be complete by
Monday night
The 15 players who now go straight into the championship on Thursday are: Thomas
Levet (France), Adam Scott (Australia), Ian Woosnam (UK), Peter O'Malley (Australia),
Niclas Fasth (Sweden), Rapheal Jacquelin (France), David Howell (UK), Barry Lane
(UK), Brett Rumford (Australia), Greg Owen (UK), Darren Lee (UK), Fredrik Jacobson
(Sweden), Geoff Ogilvie (Australia), Soren Hansen (Denmark), John Bickerton (UK).
