Vijay Singh given lifetime
membership of European Tour
Vijay Singh, who spent six years in Europe before finding fame in the United
States as a PGA and Masters champion, was awarded honorary lifetime membership
today on the European tour.
Singh, who toiled as a teaching pro in Borneo in 1985, resurrected his career
when he qualified for the European tour in 1988. He won six times, then came to
the PGA Tour and broke through with his PGA Championship victory in 1998 and the
Masters last year.
Earlier this year, the 38-year-old from Fiji won European tour events at the
Malaysian Open and Singapore Masters.
''I will always cherish this great honour,'' Singh said from Wentworth, where
he is playing the Volvo PGA this week. ''I've always enjoyed playing on the European
tour. I've always felt very much at home in Europe and I will be back to play
here a lot more.''
Others who have been given honorary lifetime membership include Greg Norman
last year and Ernie Els in 1999.
