PGA Tour donates $2m, encourages others

The PGA Tour will donate $2 million to relief funds for victims of the terrorist attacks, an amount that could grow if fans choose to donate the price of their tickets instead of getting a refund.

The donation would ``grow by an additional several million dollars, which would be a big step'' in relief efforts, tour spokesman Bob Combs said Friday.

The tour canceled four tournaments this week, including the $5 million American Express Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis that attracted 67 top players from six tours around the world.

Tour officials said ticketholders who wish to contribute to relief funds instead of getting their money back do not need to do anything.

Those who want a refund can call the American Express Championship office in St. Louis or Ticketmaster. The deadline is Oct. 5.

The daily attendance was expected to be about 30,000 daily at Bellerive, substantially fewer at the Tampa Bay Classic and at the Senior Tour event in North Carolina and the Tour event in Oregon.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said all tournaments are planned to resume next week -- the Pennsylvania Classic, outside Pittsburgh; the Senior Tour, in Raleigh, N.C.; and the Tour's Boise Open in Idaho.

Finchem said he expects an announcement on the Ryder Cup matches, scheduledSept. 28-30 at The Belfry in England, early next week.

The number for the American Express Championship office is 314-205-2001. For ticket refunds through Ticketmaster, the number is 1-866-WGC-2001.
