Tiger Woods taking time out before Open

Tiger Woods finished up an even-par round of 71 at Westchester Country Club then announced he was 'going fishing" to mellow out before making his next major championship run at the British Open.

"I am going fishing," said Woods, whose plans were put on hold for a day as the final round of the rain-delayed Buick Classic was carried over to Monday.

Woods was never really in the hunt after an opening-round 75 and finished at four-under 280, 12 strokes behind winner Sergio Garcia of Spain.

The 25-year-old Woods was also undone by a poor first round at the recent U.S. Open at Southern Hills, where his streak of four major championship victories ended with the playoff win by South African Retief Goosen.

On Monday he sounded like someone whose batteries were in need of recharging.

Asked what parts of his game he would be working on, Woods said: "I don't know. I don't care. I am going to take some time off."

Woods is known as much for his intense work ethic as he is for his wondrous talent, but the world number one said he needed to get away to give himself his best chance at next month's British Open at Royal Lytham.

"Sometimes it is nice to take a little break," said Woods. "I have taken three weeks off heading into a major before and I have won."

Woods said he was not frustrated by being off his game.

"You can't play good every week," said Woods, who as usual was a magnet for the biggest galleries of the tournament. "But what you can do is try. I tried it on every shot. It just wasn't there. Not much more I can do about that.

"I know my mechanics are a little bit off. Consequently I had to rely on a lot of feel. It puts a huge strain on you when you have to rely on feel all the time when the mechanics aren't really where they need to be."
