Tiger Woods to skip Buick Open

Tiger Woods will skip the Buick Open next week and focus on defending his PGA Championship later this month.

The Buick Open, to be held at Warwick Hills Golf and Country club, was originally on Woods' schedule but had until Friday before officially committing to the event.

Among those expected to play in the Buick Open are Phil Mickelson, the second-ranked player in the world, U.S. Open champion as well as defending champion Rocco Mediate and 16 of the top 30 PGA Tour players, said Tony Derhake, executive director of golf for General Motors Corp.'s Buick Division.

Woods played last year's Buick Open and was never seriously in contention en route to an 11th-place tie. A week later, he won the PGA Championship in a playoff for his third consecutive major.

While not under contract to play the four annual Buick-sponsored tournaments, Woods already has played two this year - the Buick Invitational in San Diego, and the Buick Classic at Westchester.
