Brooks wins Callaway Invitational Mark Brooks birdied the final
three holes Sunday for a 3-under 69 and a three-stroke victory over Jeff Gove
in the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational. Brooks, the 1996 PGA Championship
winner, had a 16-under 272 total in the tournament featuring PGA Tour, LPGA Tour
and Champions Tour players. "They were some pretty decent rounds.
That's not a bad score around here," said Brooks, who lost an 18-hole playoff
to Ratief Goosen in the 2001 U.S. Open. "People didn't believe me,
but I would have retired had I won the Open," said Brooks, who finished 95th
on this season's money list. "But now I'm not going to." Brooks,
also the 1992 winner, earned $60,000. Gove, who will return to the Buy.com
Tour next season following two years on the PGA Tour, also birdied the final three
holes for a 66. Loren Roberts (68) and Duffy Waldorf (72) tied for third at 11-under
277. Wendy Ward, one of five women who advanced to the final round, shot a 72
for a 281 total. Johnny Miller, 2 under after three rounds, withdrew because
of back pain.
