Injury
forces Fred Couples to withdraw A sore back has forced Fred Couples
to withdraw from the $3.5 million Air Canada Championship. Couples, a Seattle-born
player who was scheduled to make his first appearance at the event, informed tournament
officials of the decision late Tuesday afternoon. "I gather he's having
a problem even getting out of bed," said tournament co-chair Led Dodson.
The tournament, which is in its last year on the PGA Tour, will be played
from Thursday through Sunday. The 42-year-old Couples is a 14-time winner
on tour, including the 1992 Masters, but he finished short of the top 125 on the
money list for the first time last season. He's currently ranked 144th.
