Nine amateurs out distance John Daly

Dreams came true Thursday, Oct. 17 for nine recreational golfers who earned $100,000 each by outdistancing John Daly in the finals of the inaugural Pinnacle Distance Challenge.

The event at the Palms Resort Golf Course was the culmination of a year-long Pinnacle promotion that offered golfers an opportunity to meet the two-time major champion in a head-to-head, long-drive competition for a portion of a $1-million purse.

"The true rewards of the Pinnacle Distance Challenge are providing once in a lifetime opportunities to the twelve qualifying challengers, as well as life changing experiences for the nine winners," said George Sine, Vice President of Golf Ball Marketing and Strategic Planning for the Acushnet Company.

Responses to how the winners would spend their newfound windfalls ranged from becoming a first-time homebuyer to purchasing a long overdue engagement ring.

"Words can't express how I feel right now," said Jeremy West, 22, from Abiline, Texas. "I'm absolutely speechless. I know I was lucky to win the $10,000 and the free trip for winning the regional challenge in Houston, but this is unbelievable."

Joining West in the winner's circle were Chris Satveit (Nashville, Tenn..); Scott Smith (Cincinnati), Dwight Pope (Augusta, Ga.), D.J. Nelson (Mobile, Ala.), Michael McLaney (Webb, Ala.), Andy Zianio (Glen Burnie, Md.), Michael McDonald (Deerfield, Fla.) and David Gureckis (W. Bridgewater, Mass.). The three additional challengers were Joel Poe (Hazlehurst, Ga.), Ben Wood (Post Falls, Idaho) and Brian Davidson (Baldwin, Ga.).
