Faldo targets 2006 Ryder Cup Captaincy

Nick Faldo threw his hat into the ring yesterday for the position of Europe’s Ryder Cup captain in 2006 in Ireland.

The Englishman’s decision to make himself available for the K Club puts the six-time major winner in direct competition with Colin Montgomerie for a role the Irish insist should go to one of their own.

Faldo disclosed his willingness to take on Montgomerie in 2006 after standing down from the race to lead Europe in 2004. Although initially keen to take charge when Europe defend the trophy at Oakland Hills, the former Open and Masters champion withdrew his candidacy earlier this month.

Now, though, it looks as if 2004 will be the Englishman’s swansong on the playing side before he mounts a campaign for the match in Ireland. "If I’m going to do the captaincy then I’d like to do it properly," he said. "It’s a job where you need to prepare for two years and I’d still love to do it. I’m going to try for 2006 and Monty has said he wants to do it as well."

Montgomerie first expressed an interest in the Irish job last year and could be considered the front-runner for 2006.

More immediately, Bernhard Langer has said he can’t see how he can qualify to play in 2004 unless the system changes and is "seriously considering" a bid for the captaincy in Oakland Hills. Ian Woosnam will be his main rival for the jo
