Faldo to play at European Open

Nick Faldo last night confirmed his presence in the field for the 25th Smurfit European Open at the K Club early next month.

The news that the six-time major winner is taking part will come as something of a coup for the organisers, particularly in light of Faldo's outstanding display in last week's US Open at Bethpage. He ended the second highest European behind Sergio Garcia and ahead of Pádraig Harrington.

Faldo (44) won the European Open when it was staged at Sunningdale in 1992 and joins a host of former champions, including Greg Norman, Bernhard Langer and last year's winner Darren Clarke.

"I'm thrilled to be able to play and I'm very excited by the prospect of competing again at the K Club. I hope that as well as capturing the European Open, I can catch a salmon or two in the River Liffey on the course," he said.
