Faldo
withdraws from European Open Nick Faldo on Monday withdrew from
this week's European Open after suffering a stomach ailment. ``I'm really
disappointed to have let everyone down, particularly my fans over in Ireland,''
said Faldo, who has gastroenteritis. The event, starting Thursday, was
scheduled to be Faldo's first appearance since finishing fifth in the U.S Open
last month. ``I was looking forward to returning to Dublin and playing
at the K Club, but this illness has knocked me for six and it's going to take
a week to get back up to strength,'' he said. ``I was suffering a heavy
cold at the end of last week, which then developed into gastroenteritis. I've
had to spend the last couple of days in bed. Faldo, 44, said he hoped to
recover in time for the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond next week in preparation
for the Open later this month. This year, the Open is at Muirfield, where
Faldo won his first major in 1987. He also won the event in 1992.
