course designer honoured American Joe Lee, a man who has designed
more than 200 golf courses in his life has been honoured at a banquet dinner in
Florida. Lee, who is 81-years-old has was made an honourary life member
of the Delaire Country Club, one of the many courses he has designed. Other courses
designed by the aging legend include Doral's Blue Monster, La Costa and Walt Disney
World's Magnolia Course Presenting him with his membership Club president
Mal Levenson paid tribute, saying, "He is truly the nicest Southern gentleman
you will ever meet." Accepting the award Lee said, "I've always
had a soft spot in my heart for Delaire Country Club. "I certainly
want to thank you for the opportunity of having worked here - now I'll be able
to take advantage of the fine buffets here at noon." Later when pressed
as to which of courses he liked the most Lee refused to be drawn responding, "You
love your children for their different characteristics and it's the same with
a golf course."
