Nick
Price awarded Payne Stewart Award Zimbabwe's Nick Price, who
has captured three major golf titles, was named the 2002 winner of the US PGA
Tour's Payne Stewart Award on Wednesday. The award is given to a player
who shares Stewart's respect for golf's traditions, commitment to uphold the game's
heritage and charitable support in word and deed. The former world No. 1
often speaks to fans outside the ropes at PGA events and is a great charity contributor
in the United States and Africa. At 45, Price remains one of the best golfers
in the world. A 40-time winner worldwide, he is 11th in the World Golf Rankings.
He has won 17 PGA Tour titles, including two PGA Championships and a British Open. In
Zimbabwe, Price is a major supporter of Harare Shelter for Destitutes, a program
for school-aged children who have lost parents to AIDS or are children of the
blind. The program provides food, shelter, clothing, medicine, school fees
and skills training. Price also established the Nick Price Junior Golf Foundation,
which provides grass roots development for children in Zimbabwe to learn the game
of golf and financial support for children to play golf internationally. Price
also established the Hearts and Hope in Palm Beach, Florida. The program provides
grief support and management to children aged 3-17 who have lost a parent. Stewart
was one of the best players on the PGA Tour when he died in a plane crash the
week of the 1999 Tour Championship. His 11 titles included three major crowns.
