Ryder Cup team named Team of the Year

Winning the Ryder Cup at The De Vere Belfry against all odds earned Sam Torrance and his European Ryder Cup team the prestigious award of Team of the Year at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards which were held on Sunday night.

Their captain Sam Torrance accepted the award on the team’s behalf and said, "There is a saying ‘Sieze the day’ - that day came and they seized it!

"This means such a lot to the players and myself and I am proud and honoured to receive this trophy on behalf of the Team."

When the noticeable weaker European team took on the United States in September they played against the odds, but thanks to the captaincy of Torrance, who led from the front, and an overall team effort they achieved an unexpected win.
