Ballesteros withdraws from Open

Seve Ballesteros withdrew from the Open on Friday, choosing to pass on a tournament he has won three times.

Ballesteros, who has won five majors, gave no reason for withdrawing from the July 18-21 tournament at Muirfield, Scotland. He has played in the last 27 Opens, missing the cut the last six years.

``He faxed us to tell us he was withdrawing but there was no reason given at all,'' the Open's spokesman Stewart McDougall said. ``He's a very popular player and will be missed.''

The 45-year-old Ballesteros won the Open at Royal Lytham in 1979 and '88, and won at St. Andrews in 1984.

Ballesteros was disqualified from the Irish Open on Thursday after signing an incorrect scorecard.

Ballesteros, playing in the Irish Open after an eight-week break, was disqualified for signing a 10 on the par-5 final hole when he shot a 12.

Ballesteros, who won the Masters in 1980 and '83, is winless since the 1995 Spanish Open.
