Nilsmark named Solheim Cup Captain

The Evian Ladies European Tour are delighted to announce the captain for The Solheim Cup 2003 European Team - five time Solheim Cup player, Catrin Nilsmark from Sweden.

The Solheim Cup 2003 will be played at Barsebäck Golf & Country Club, Sweden, 12-14th September 2003.

Nilsmark will always be remembered as the player who holed the winning putt at Dalmahoy in 1992, enabling Europe to win the trophy for the first time. With a personal tally of eight and a half points she also helped Europe to victory in 2000 at Loch Lomond.

The 35-year-old from Gothenburg was delighted to accept the invitation to become Europe's captain.

"It did come as a little bit of a surprise when I was asked, but this will definately be the pinnacle of my career," said Catrin, who has won twice on the Evian Ladies European Tour.

"It's a fantastic honour to captain your continent and being in my home country too, that just makes it extra special for me."

"I'm thoroughly looking forward to next year already and I hope that I can go to Barseback with Europe having retained the trophy at Interlachen this year."

Ian Randell, Chief Operating Officer for the Evian Ladies European Tour, explained why Nilsmark's qualities appealed to the Board of Directors:

"Catrin's extensive Solheim Cup experience, coupled with her popularity with players, officials, media and the public made her the perfect candidate to captain the European Team during The Solheim Cup's first visit to Sweden", said Randell.

Lars Granberg, Chairman of The Solheim Cup 2003 Organising Committee, expressed his delight in the event coming to Sweden:

"It is a great honour for the Swedish Golf Federation (SGF) to host the world's most prestigious women's golf event. It will help us to further develop golf in Scandinavia and across Europe."

The Solheim family have an affinity with Scandinavia, with the late Karsten Solheim, founder of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation (KMC), having been born in Norway. KMC are the producers of PING, custom-fit, custom-built golf clubs.

Speaking on behalf of the Solheim family, Bob Cantin, Project Director of The Solheim Cup, said:

"We are very pleased by Catrin's appointment. It is particularly fitting that a Swede should be captain of the European Team when The Solheim Cup visits Scandinavia for the first time next year."

The support for the event from the commercial sector in Sweden has been outstanding, with a full official partner schedule already having been achieved. The Evian Ladies European Tour are proud to announce the following companies as Official Partners to The Solheim Cup 2003:

Volvo, HP Invent, Scandic Hotels, ForeningsSparbanken, Ohrlings PricewaterhouseCoopers, American Express and SAS.

This prestigious event, which is the pinnacle of women's golf, will be the largest golf tournament that the country has ever hosted, and the organisers are expecting sell-out crowds. The Evian Ladies European Tour will be announcing the ticket launch soon. Tickets are limited and it is anticipated that the demand for these will be high.
