Sheehan named 2003 US Solheim Cup captain

Patty Sheehan will keep her job as captain of the U.S. Solheim Cup team in 2003.

Sheehan, who leads the 2002 team into play against Europe beginning Friday, was named captain by a five-member selection committee formed by the LPGA Board of Directors.

"This is such a wonderful honor for me," Sheehan said.

This year marks Sheehan's first as captain for the Americans. The United States is trying to win back the cup after losing it in 2000.

A 23-year veteran of the LPGA Tour, Sheehan played on four Solheim Cup teams from 1990-96.

Her European counterpart this year is Dale Reid. Next year, the European captain will be Catrin Nilsmark, who isn't on the team this year, but has added some spice to the event nonetheless by openly criticizing several members of the American team.

The event will be played in 2003 in Sweden, as it shifts to odd-number years to avoid a conflict with the Ryder Cup, moved to even years after being postponed last year because of the terrorist attacks.
