Sam Torrance awarded OBE

Sam Torrance has crowned a magical year by landing an OBE in the New Year's Honours list - and Jonny Wilkinson hopes to enjoy similar success in 2003 after being handed an MBE.

Torrance was the inspiration behind the sporting triumph of the past 12 months, skippering Europe's Ryder Cup team to their stunning victory over the United States at The Belfry.

A former hero as a player in golf's greatest team competition, Torrance was universally acclaimed for his captaincy, as he galvanised a European team many thought would be overwhelmed, sealing his place in history by getting his singles line-up spot on to snatch the coveted trophy back from a disgruntled American side which contained the world's top two ranked players.
