Tiger Woods returns to defend in Germany

Tiger Woods makes a rare appearance on the European Tour this week when he defends his Deutsche Bank - SAP Open TPC of Europe title.

The US Masters champion has a magnificent record at the tournament after two victories in three years, and will again start as favourite when the event begins on Thursday.

The St Leon-Rot course, which will hold pleasant memories for Woods, has changed greatly since last year, with new water hazards and redeveloped greens to add further spice to the event.

Big crowds will turn out in force to see the seven times major winner, who chipped in last year en route to a four shot win over the New Zealander Michael Campbell.

Another American John Daly will hope for success after previous success on German soil, in the BMW International Opewn.

Elsewhere in a field of superb quality Lee Westwood will take heart from his superb tournament record, with two previous victories in Hamburg in 1998 and 2000.

US Open champion Retief Goosen could well provide the most serious challenge to Woods, while Angel Cabrera will be full of confidence after his Benson and Hedges International Open triumph at the Belfry last weekend.
