Woods & Els team up for Bridges match

Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, the top two golfers in the world, will team up to take on Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia in a televised match later this year.

The contest, dubbed the Battle at the Bridges, will be played in a better-ball format over 18 holes at The Bridges course here on July 28.

Woods, the world number one, has won two out of three tournaments this season.

Els, the world number two, has four victories this year in seven starts, two on the U.S. PGA Tour and two on the European circuit.

World number three Mickelson has had four top-10 finishes in five tournaments this season.

Garcia, the world number eight, has struggled this year. A tie for 25th place is the Spaniard's best performance in five U.S. events and he also missed the cut in his only European Tour start.

The Battle at the Bridges will be the fifth in an annual series.

Woods won the inaugural event in 1999, beating David Duval 2 and 1, but a year later he lost by one hole to Garcia.

The world number one teamed up with Swede Annika Sorenstam to defeat Duval and Karrie Webb on the 19th hole in an alternate-shot format in 2001. Last year, Woods and Jack Nicklaus defeated Garcia and Lee Trevino 3 and 2.
