Fred Couples returns to the worlds top 30

Fred Couples’s first win in five years, at the Houston Open, has seen him jump back into the world’s top 50.

The 1992 US Masters champion fell out of the top 50 in March 2001, but his drought-breaking victory at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas, moved him up 48 places to No.29.

Tiger Woods is still well ahead of the rest of the world at the top of the ratings, with South African Ernie Els a distant second, while Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson and Mike Weir round out the top five.

At No.10, Irishman Padraig Harrington is the only European player inside the top 10, and if he performs poorly in the next couple of weeks and slips further, there will be no Europeans in the top 10 for the first time since the rankings began on April 6, 1986.
