Daly withdraws
from Malaysian Open
John Daly withdrew from the Malaysian Open to spend more time with
his family.
Daly said the death of his mother in November contributed to his
decision to withdraw from the Feb. 20-23 event, according to a statement
released by tournament officials on Friday.
"The end of 2002 was very sad for me personally with my family's
loss of our mother," Bernama's national news agency quoted
Daly's statement as saying.
"Although I had initially committed to play in the Malaysian
Open, I have decided to stay in the U.S. in the early part of 2003
to spend more time with my family."
In January, Daly told organizers of the Heineken Classic in Melbourne,
Australia, he was pulling out of the event. Last November, a week
after his mother died, he was disqualified and fined after refusing
to sign his scorecard and throwing his putter into a lake during
the second round.
