Intruder found asleep in Ernie Els bed

A 25-year-old man has appeared in court on charges of housebreaking after he was found sleeping in South African star golfer Ernie Els' bed on New Year's day, police said on Thursday.

A police spokesman said Els and friends discovered the man asleep when they returned home shortly before dawn. The door to Els' new luxury home near George, about 600 km (373 miles) east of Cape Town, had been unlocked.

The intruder was released without bail and will appear in court again on January 17. Els, currently world number three who is playing in a competition in Hawaii, was not immediately available for comment.
