Els & Faldo raise $100,000 for charity round

Last night at the Johnnie Walker Classic Gala dinner, Nick Faldo and Ernie Els auctioned themselves to play nine holes of golf to the highest bidder and as a result raised US$52,000.

Singaporeans David Lee and 'Howie' Lee Yong paid US$30,000 and US$22,000 to partner Els and Faldo respectively.

Johnnie Walker matched the amount raised with all proceeds going to Perth Charity, Telethon, giving a total of US$104,000 (Aus$175,000).

Funds for Telethon have been raised throughout the Johnnie Walker Classic through the sale of Johnnie Walker Classic caps with 100 percent of sales being donated, through the 'Golfer Behind the Bar' night at the Johnnie Walker Watershed, a 24-hour golf marathon held in October and last night's auction at the Gala dinner.

"Johnnie Walker's 'Keep Walking' campaign supports ordinary Australians doing extraordinary things and Telethon supports extraordinary Australians every day, through their work with local charities," said Stephen Morley, Global Marketing Director, Johnnie Walker.

"In the 12-year history of the event, we have been able to give something back to the local community in each of the destinations that have hosted the tournament through supporting local charities and promoting the 'Keep Walking' message of personal progress.

"We know that Telethon has touched the lives of many Western Australians over more than 35 years and we look forward to supporting the variety of children's charities it supports," he added.

To date more than Aus$270,000 has been raised for Telethon as a result of activities held by organisers of the Johnnie Walker Classic.

Telethon supports a number of WA charities including the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, Medical Research Foundation, Torchbearers for Legacy, The TVW Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, Fremantle Hospital, Women and infants Research Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, The Asthma Foundation, The Speech and Hearing Centre for Children and the Make a Wish Foundation.
