Hoch to miss the Open again

Scott Hoch, who says he hates the cold, rainy British weather, will miss his third British Open in a row.

Hoch and Kirk Triplett were the only players from the world top 50 who were missing when the Royal & Ancient club announced the makeup of the entry list for the field at Royal St. George's in southeast England.

Winner of the Ford Championship at Doral in March, Hoch has made few visits to the one major to be staged outside the United States.

Although it is played at the height of the summer -- July 17-20 this year -- the Open usually takes place on coastal links courses and players often have to endure strong, cold winds blowing off the sea.

Hoch has played the Open five times. His best finish was a tie for eighth last year at Muirfield. He also has played Royal Birkdale (missed cut), Royal Lytham & St. Annes (missed cut) and twice at St. Andrews (missed cut in '90, tied for 68th in '95).

The total field -- including players in the qualifying rounds -- is 2,150.
