Mickelson to try out for pro baseball team

Golfer Phil Mickelson will try-out with the Toledo Mud Hens on Friday, hoping to pitch in a game for the Triple-A baseball team this weekend.

World number 10 Mickelson says he has no intention of pursuing baseball as a career but believes he can pitch well enough to get into a Triple-A game.

"This is a lifetime dream of mine and I'm extremely grateful to the Toledo organization for giving me the chance to live it," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Mickelson said he often played catch to loosen up his arm. He has previously worked with Texas Rangers pitching coach Tom House and last weekend he threw to six players from the Akron Aeros Double-A team at the NEC Invitational golf tournament.

He offered the players $300 if they could hit a home run off him but no one could.

"I know what sport is mine but I just could not pass on this opportunity," Mickelson said.

Mickelson has won 21 PGA Tour events and is widely considered one of the best players never to win a major. The left-handed golfer throws right-handed at baseball.
