Don Pooley to miss start of season

Defending U.S. Senior Open champion Don Pooley, recovering from shoulder surgery, will not open his 2003 Champions Tour season until sometime in April.

Pooley underwent surgery on Jan. 3 to repair a labrum tear in his left shoulder. He originally hurt the shoulder last May and opted for rehab while continuing his playing schedule. Dr. Champ Baker of the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Ga., performed the surgery.

"I should be as good as new in April, but I'm really disappointed," Pooley said. "I was really looking forward to starting the year in Hawaii at the MasterCard Championship ."

Pooley battled various injuries in the early 1990s. He underwent surgery for a ruptured disc in his neck in January, 1992 and had lower back surgery in October, 1993.
