Nick Price pulls out of PGA Championship

Twice winner Nick Price has withdrawn from next week's U.S. PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York to spend more time with his family.

"Nick withdrew from the field today, citing family reasons," a tournament spokesman told Reuters on Tuesday. "He has been replaced by first alternate Billy Mayfair."

Price, champion at Bellerive in 1992 and Southern Hills in 1994, last missed the PGA Championship in 1991 to be at home with his wife Sue for the birth of their first child, Gregory.

The three-times major winner, 10th-ranked in the world, is the third high-profile player to withdraw from the last of the year's four major championships.

Six-times major winner Nick Faldo pulled out last month to stay at home with his wife Valerie and their new-born daughter Emma Scarlett.

Fellow Briton Ian Woosnam, the 1991 U.S. Masters champion, withdrew last week, following the death of his father Harold.

The 85th U.S. PGA championship runs from August 14-17 at the Oak Hill Country Club's East Course.

Defending champion is Rich Beem, whose wife Sara gave birth to their first child last month.
