Singh out of Match Play
with rib injury
Vijay Singh pulled out of this week's Match Play Championship on Sunday due
to a rib injury suffered two weeks ago in San Diego.
As the fourth-ranked player in the world, Singh would have been the top seed
in the Ben Hogan bracket for next week's World Golf Championships event in Carlsbad,
California.
A tireless worker, Singh injured himself at the Buick Invitational. The Fiji
native won one of his first four starts this season, capturing the Phoenix Open
for his 12th PGA Tour victory.
A two-time major winner, Singh never has made it past the second round in four
Match Play appearances.
Singh's replacement is Carl Pettersson of Sweden, who began the week as the
top alternate. Ranked 67th in the world as of Sunday, Pettersson will face Tiger
Woods in the first round.
The official brackets will be released Monday. The tournament begins Wednesday
at La Costa Resort and Spa.
