McGwire wins skills challenge against pros

Mark McGwire can still go deep -- and he's pretty good around the greens, too.

The former baseball star won the ADT Skills Challenge on Monday, beating Greg Norman and other top professional golfers.

McGwire won the long drive event at 319 yards, and clinched the victory over Norman in the last skill, hitting a short iron within 21 inches of the hole.

McGwire -- second in the greenside bunker, trouble shot, putting and chip shot competitions -- finished with $92,500. An amateur in golf, he will donate the money to Cardinals Care.

"I thought I'd be nervous, but when they brought out the baseball bats on the tee, that made me comfortable," McGwire said.

"Winning this is really something neat. I'm sort of out of my element but I've taken golf pretty seriously these last two years. I'm an athlete and I wanted to be competitive. I'm sure if we had kept score in a round of golf, it would have been different."

Norman was second with $87,000, followed by Paul Azinger with $83,500. Rich Beem, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Faldo, Peter Jacobsen, Padraig Harrington and Dudley Hart also took part in the competition at the Boca Raton Resort & Club.
