Purse increase for Volvo Masters to 3.5m Euros

Record prize money of 3.5 million euros ($3.94 million) has been confirmed for the season-ending Volvo Masters Andalucia at Valderrama in Spain, the European Tour announced on Monday.

The prize fund, up from the 3.14 million euros on offer last year, equals the tournament purse at the 2003 Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth in May.

Apart from the four majors and the four World Golf Championship events, next week's Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland, with prize money of 4.25 million euros, is the only event on the 2003 European Tour schedule offering more money.

Volvo event manager Mel Pyatt said in a statement: "There are many elements that go towards creating great tournaments, and prize money is obviously amongst the most important.

"I am therefore delighted that the Volvo Masters Andalucia is able to maintain its leading position on the European Tour international schedule."

The winner of this year's event, which takes place from October 30 to November 23, will receive a cheque for 583,330 euros, the same amount earned by Spaniard Ignacio Garrido for his triumph at the Volvo PGA Championship in May.

Defending champions at Valderrama are Germany's Bernhard Langer and Briton Colin Montgomerie, who opted to share last year's title after both players squared the first two extra holes in fading light.
