Mike Weir back in world top ten

Mike Weir earned his second PGA Tour victory of 2003 Sunday at the Nissan Open and with the win, the Canadian moved up six places to No. 9 in this week's World Golf Rankings. Weir returned to the top 10 for the first time since January of 2002.

Tiger Woods, who shared fifth at Riviera, remained comfortably in first place, followed by Ernie Els. The two will be the top seeds this week at the WGC- Accenture Match Play Championship.

Phil Mickelson stayed in third and Vijay Singh held on to fourth. Singh withdrew from the Match Play event at La Costa due to injured ribs. Retief Goosen, the 2001 U.S. Open champion, is fifth.

Sergio Garcia, who missed the cut at the Nissan Open, kept his sixth-place ranking from last week but a pair of former PGA Champions switched places. Davis Love III, the 1997 winner at Winged Foot, jumped to seventh while 2001 champion David Toms dipped to No. 8.

Weir came in ninth, followed by Padraig Harrington, who fell one spot to round out the top 10.

Nick Price, who held a piece of the lead on the back nine Sunday before tying for third, climbed three places to No. 11. Chris DiMarco fell two to 12th, while Rocco Mediate remained 13th.

Jim Furyk plummeted three rungs to 14th, while Charles Howell III, who lost the Nissan Open in a playoff to Weir, climbed six spots to 15th. Colin Montgomerie missed the cut at Riviera and fell four to No. 16.

Robert Allenby moved down to 17th, Bob Estes held on to 18th, Justin Leonard dropped down two to 19th and Jerry Kelly held on to No. 20.

Michael Campbell, ranked 19th a week ago, moved out of the top 20 to 22nd this week.

Arjun Atwal claimed his second title on the European Tour at the Malaysian Open. With the win, Atwal moved up 130 places to No. 183 and is now the sixth- highest-ranked Asian golfer in the world.
