Wie, Woods & Sorenstam tee up in Pro-Am

The Kapalua Plantation Course will be the center of the golf universe on Wednesday.

For the first time, Tiger Woods, Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie will play the same course on the same day. It will happen when Woods tees off at 7 a.m. and Sorenstam at 12:30 p.m. in the Mercedes Championships pro-am.

''We think it is very special to have the number one men's player in the world, the number one women's player in the world and, in Michelle, the most exciting junior in the world, all at the Plantation Course on Wednesday,'' said Gary Planos, the tournament chairman. ''It should be a great kickoff to an exciting championship here.''

All three players have played on Maui in the past - Woods four times in the Mercedes, Wie in previous pro-ams at the Champions Skins Games at Wailea and Sorenstam in the LPGA Skins Game last year at Wailea. But Wednesday will be the first time anywhere that all three will play on the same course in the same event.

Sorenstam is sponsored by Mercedes, which made the arrangements to have her come to the event. Wie, a 14-year-old Punahou School freshman, is in demand for pro-ams everywhere after her summer included the title in the U.S. Women's Public Links Championship. The two females will ensure that the sometimes mundane pro-am will have an unusual spark.

''(Sorenstam) is such a fantastic player, the excitement that she generates certainly says something about women's golf,''said Nancy Cross, the tournament director. ''She is unbelievable. I definitely want to see her and I can't wait to see Michelle.''
