Wie given sponsors exemption to ShopRite

13-year-old golf star has been given a sponsor's exemption to play in the ShopRite LPGA Classic in late June.

Michelle Wie, of Honolulu, received national attention last summer when she qualified for two LPGA Tour events, the Takefuji Classic and the Wendy's Championship. She received a sponsor's exemption for the LPGA's Asahi Ryokuken International.

Wie reached the semifinals of the United States Women's Amateur Public Links at age 12, becoming the youngest ever semifinalist in any women's USGA amateur event.

Annika Sorenstam is the defending ShopRite Classic champion. A field of 142 will compete in this year's event at the Seaview Marriott Resort and Spa Bay Course June 27-29.

"It will be a real treat for golf fans in our region to see the young lady whom many believe will someday be the most dominant player in all of golf," tournament executive Ruth Harrison said.
