Thomas Bjorn to be Ryder Cup assistant captain

Thomas Bjorn is going to the Ryder Cup after all.

The Danish star, a member of Europe's winning teams in 1997 and 2002, will serve as one of Bernhard Langer's assistant captains during the Sept. 17-19 matches against the United States at Oakland Hills in Michigan.

"My golf has not been good enough the last six months and I had forgotten about making the Ryder Cup team a long while ago," Bjorn said Friday at the European Masters. "When my golf is good enough I know I will be in the side, but it hasn't and I have struggled with my game for the best part of six months.

"I would love to be going to Detroit as a playing member, but I will not sit on that plane thinking it should have been me because it shouldn't be me. I am happy to be going and I am looking forward to doing the job Bernhard wants me to do."

Sweden's Anders Forsbrand will serve as vice captain, and countryman Joakim Haeggmen will join Bjorn as an assistant captain.
