European Ryder Cup team taking shape

Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Darren Clarke, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Lee Westwood booked their places on the European Ryder Cup team on Sunday.

Irishman Harrington, Spaniards Garcia and Jimenez and Britons Clarke and Westwood automatically qualified as the leading five players in the world points standings after they completed their final rounds at the WGC-NEC Invitational at Firestone Country Club.

A further five players will qualify via the European points standings after next week's BMW International Open in Munich.

European captain Bernhard Langer will then add two wildcard selections to round out his 12-man line-up for next month's showdown with the United States at Oakland Hills Country Club.

Europe, who have won five of the last nine Ryder Cup matches, will defend the trophy at Oakland Hills in Detroit, Michigan from September 17 to 19.

U.S. captain Hal Sutton has already completed his team, having named veteran Jay Haas and Stewart Cink as his wildcard picks after last week's U.S. PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

U.S. team: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Jim Furyk, Kenny Perry, David Toms, Chad Campbell, Chris DiMarco, Fred Funk, Chris Riley, Jay Haas and Stewart Cink.
