Record purse for Volvo PGA Championship

The winnerof this year's Volvo PGA Championship will pick up a record £625,000 cheque with total prize money for the Wentworth event up £250,000 to a make a total pot of £3.75m.

Current Volvo Order of Merit winner Ernie Els and 2003 US PGA Tour money- list champion Vijay Singh ranked third and second in the world respectively have confirmed they will take part in the 50th tournament, which takes place from May 27-30.

Ken Schofield, executive director of the European Tour, said: 'We are very proud to reach the 50th playing of this great championship with a prize fund of £3.75m for 2004, further enhancing the status of the Volvo PGA Championship as the Tour's flagship event.'
