Michelle Wie hires Fluff Cowan as caddie

American teen golf prodigy Michelle Wie has hired Mike 'Fluff' Cowan, the former caddie of golf star Tiger Woods, to handle her bags this week at the two million-dollar LPGA Michelob ULTRA Open.

The 14-year-old Hawaiian will play her third event of the LPGA season at Kingsmill, near the Golden Horseshoe course where she is expected to defend her US Women's Amateur Public Links crown next month.

Cowan caddied for Woods when the American superstar won his first major at the 1997 Masters, and handled duties for three years before Woods dropped him. Cowan now caddies for US Open champion Jim Furyk, who is out of action with a wrist injury.

In her first event of the year, Wie fired a brilliant 68 in the second round and missed the cut by a stroke at a men's tour event in Hawaii. She finished fourth at the year's first Grand Slam event in Palm Springs, California.

Wie joins Swedish women's world number one Annika Sorenstam and a host of top Asian players led by South Korea's defending champion Grace Park as title contenders.

The long-driving Wie has used half the six invitations she is allowed to accept on the tour this season. She also plans to play in France in July, and the following month at Dublin, Ohio.
