Mark Calcavecchia is late for his wedding

Little went right for American Mark Calcavecchia on Thursday as he shot his worst round of the season at the Italian Open and arrived late for his wedding.

The 1989 British Open champion, making his first visit to the country of his Sicilian-born grandfather, shot an ugly six-over-par 78 before dashing off to Lake Como to marry his fiancee Brenda who is caddying for him at the tournament.

The couple were held up in traffic, however, and were late for the ceremony.

Earlier in the day, Calcavecchia had had a misunderstanding with his caddy, who had written on two of his golf balls "I DO".

Calcavecchia mistook it for "IOO" and asked her if that was what she thought he would shoot, though he later made no excuses for his performance.

"It was very disappointing coming to Italy for the first time and having my worst round of the year," Calcavecchia told reporters.

"I've been in constant pain with my back recently, my feet hurt, my knees creaked and my brain was shot but, no excuses, I just stank."

After a boat trip on Lake Como, the Calcavecchias will return to Milan to try to make the cut.
