Nick Dougherty named golfer of the month

Britain's Nick Dougherty, who won his maiden European Tour title at the Singapore Masters 10 days ago, has been named the tour's player of the month for January.

The 22-year-old Englishman was the unanimous choice of a panel comprising European Tour players and journalists.

Dougherty held off the challenge of Ryder Cup players Colin Montgomerie and Thomas Bjorn before cruising to victory by five shots at the Laguna National Golf & Country Club last month.

The previous week, he tied for fourth at the South African Open in Durban.
