Retief Goosen pulls out of Amex Championship

Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen has withdrawn from the American Express Championship because of a groin injury.

Goosen, No. 5 in the world who defeated Tiger Woods in his singles match at the Presidents Cup two weeks ago, did not play last week. He is the second player from the top five in the world ranking to miss this World Golf Championship, which starts Thursday at Harding Park.

Ernie Els, the defending champion, has been out since early August because of knee surgery.

Bernhard Langer turned down his spot in the field which he got by moving up to No. 49 in the world ranking, despite not playing last week. The tournament is for the top 50 in the world ranking, and leading money winners from the six major golf tours in the world.
