David Howell named Golfer of the Month
Britain's David Howell has been named the European Tour's player of the month for November after his three-shot victory at the inaugural Champions Tournament in China last month.
The 30-year-old Englishman held off world number one Tiger Woods to clinch the third European Tour title of his career in the opening event of the 2006 season.
A closing four-under-par 68 left Howell on 20-under 268 at Shanghai's Sheshan International Golf Club and he broke into the world's top 15 for the first time when the official rankings were announced the following day.
"I guess that winning is the thing that really makes you feel that you are a very, very good player," Howell told Reuters.
"Not many people have stood up and faced Tiger and beaten him. Tiger didn't have the greatest of days but I put him under pressure and almost didn't let him have the greatest of days.
"I performed really well in a massive tournament with a lot on the line."
Howell held off competition from compatriot Paul Casey, winner of last month's China Open, and Welsh duo Stephen Dodd and Bradley Dredge, who clinched the WGC-World Cup in Portugal two weeks ago.
A panel comprising European Tour players and journalists chooses the award, which is presented each month to honour the best performance by a member on the European Tour and in worldwide competition.
