Phil Mickelson starts preparing for PGA

Phil Mickelson didn't compete at the Buick Open, but he didn't take the weekend off, either.

Mickelson spent several hours Sunday at Baltusrol Golf Club preparing for the PGA Championship that starts Aug. 11, said Anthony S. Cicatiello, a member who heads the club's communications committee.

Mickelson had never played the famed Lower Course, host to a slew of majors, the most recent of which was the 1993 U.S. Open.

Most club members did not know Mickelson was on the grounds until he came off the 18th green and agreed to pose for a picture outside the clubhouse with the club's newly crowned over-55 champion, Vincent Dolan, said Cicatiello.

Then Mickelson, along with short-game coach Dave Pelz and his caddie, went back to work, checking out No. 1.

On the holes, Mickelson usually hit a few drives and then would chip to different locations on the greens, which Pelz had marked with flags.

"He takes notes all over the place while he's doing this," Cicatiello said.
