Injury forces Greg Norman to delay senior debut

Greg Norman has withdrawn from the Senior PGA Championship, postponing his debut on the 50-and-over circuit while he recovers from back surgery.

Norman had back surgery March 22 and had planned to return for the Senior PGA, which will be held next week at Laurel Valley Golf Club outside Pittsburgh.

``It's just that I don't feel like I'm ready to compete at a major championship level,'' Norman said. ``After conferring with my physician, we decided it was in my best interest to stay the course of the rehabilitation program that was outlined immediately after surgery.''

Norman said his recovery is ahead of schedule, and he expects to return to competition at the end of June. Among tournaments he plans to play are the Senior Players Championship on July 7-10, and the following week at St. Andrews for the Open.
