Morgan Pressel wins her final amateur event
Morgan Pressel closed out her amateur career with a victory Wednesday, making a 10-foot putt on the second playoff hole to win her third straight Florida high school girls 1A tournament title.
The 17-year-old Pressel, who finished second at the U.S. Women's Open and won the U.S. Women Amateur this summer, represented Boca Raton's St. Andrew's School. She defeated Vicky Hurst of Holy Trinity Episcopal (Melbourne) in the playoff.
``It was a great way to end my amateur career,'' Pressel said. ``I came out this year for my school.''
Pressel had two rounds of 67 for a 10-under 134 total at The Saints Golf Course.
In three weeks, Pressel will competed in the 90-hole LPGA Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International at Daytona Beach. She plans on playing in her first LPGA Tour event as a pro at the Safeway International, on March 16-19 in Phoenix, on a sponsor's exemption.
Former LPGA commissioner Ty Votaw did not allow Pressel an exemption to begin playing on the tour with full benefits before her 18th birthday on May 26, but did permit her to attend Q-School prior to turning 18.
