Open likely to return to St Andrews in 2010

The Open is likely to return to St Andrews in 2010, the 150th anniversary of the first tournament, Royal & Ancient (R&A) chief executive Peter Dawson said on Monday.

"The world of golf likes to come to St Andrews with reasonable frequency and when the eyes of the world are on St Andrews it does the Open Championship a lot of good," Dawson told a news conference.

Dawson said he would be surprised if the tournament committee did not decide to name the home of golf as the venue in five years time.

"We have nine venues that are active for us and the way it seems to work is that the Open comes to St Andrews about every five years and to each of the others about every 10," Dawson said, the day after world number one Tiger Woods won his second Open at St Andrews.

Turnberry in Scotland is likely to return as a venue in 2009 for its first Open since 1994 following traffic improvements, although that decision has not been confirmed.

The Open is due to take place at Hoylake, England in 2006, Carnoustie, Scotland in 2007 and Royal Birkdale, England in 2008.

The last six Opens at St Andrews were in 2000, 1995, 1990, 1984, 1978 and 1970.
